A marriage in Thailand takes effect on registration before the district registrar under Civil and Commercial Code s.1448 and s.1457. The registrar must be satisfied both parties consent, so where one party does not understand Thai an interpreter attends and the declaration is interpreted before signature. We attend the amphoe with you and prepare the file beforehand.

Governing authority / legal basis
Civil and Commercial Code s.1448, s.1457 (marriage by registration); Civil Registration Act B.E. 2534 (1991); each office's own document notification
Turnaround
Book at least a few working days ahead. Marriage registration usually follows an affirmation of freedom to marry obtained from your embassy, which itself takes time and, in most cases, translation and Department of Consular Affairs certification before the amphoe will accept it.
Fees
Quoted per assignment once we know the venue, the language pair, the date and the expected duration. Confirm scope and fees with our staff by phone, Line or Email before the booking is held.

What we handle

Marriage registration

Attendance at the amphoe for the registration itself, with the registrar's questions and the declaration interpreted before either party signs.

Pre-registration document chain

Coordination of the embassy affirmation, its Thai translation and certification by the Department of Consular Affairs, in the order each office requires.

Civil registry acts

Birth and death registration, name records, house registration (thabian baan) entries and certified copies of registry records.

Immigration and land offices

Interpreting at 90-day reporting, extension and re-entry counters, and at Land Department appointments where a foreign party signs.

Documents required

Passports of both partiesPartiesThe registrar records the details exactly as they appear; a name spelled differently across documents stalls the appointment.

Evidence of the end of a prior marriageIssuing authority abroadDivorce decree or death certificate, translated and legalised. Until 28 February 2027, when Thailand's Apostille accession takes effect, consular legalisation is the operative route.

How the process runs

  1. 1

    Appointment scoped

We confirm the office, the act being registered and what that office is currently asking for, because document lists differ between districts.

    Step 1: Appointment scoped
  2. 2

    File prepared

Translations and certifications are completed in the correct order so nothing at the counter is out of sequence.

    Step 2: File prepared
  3. 3

    Attendance and interpreting

The interpreter attends, interprets the registrar's questions and the declaration, and confirms your understanding before signature.

    Step 3: Attendance and interpreting
  4. 4

    Certified copies

We obtain certified copies of the registration record, and where the marriage must be recognised abroad we prepare the translation and certification chain for it.

    Step 4: Certified copies

Why files get rejected

  • The amphoe registers the marriage; it does not verify your foreign documents. That verification is what the embassy affirmation and the certification chain provide.
  • Some district offices require the interpreter to sign the record. Bring the interpreter's identification.
  • A marriage registered in Thailand still has to be reported or recognised in your home country under that country's own rules — check with your embassy.
  • Immigration and land offices work to their own document notifications and can add a requirement without notice; we call the office before the date where it is possible.
  • An interpreter cannot advise on whether a marriage will be recognised abroad. That is a legal question for a lawyer in the receiving country.

Frequently asked questions

คำถามที่พบบ่อย (FAQ)

Is an interpreter compulsory for marriage registration in Thailand?+

The registrar must be satisfied that both parties freely consent. Where one party does not understand Thai, offices in practice require an interpreter so the declaration is understood before signature. Requirements are set office by office, so we confirm with the district office before the appointment.

Can we register the marriage at any district office?+

Registration is made before a district registrar; in practice offices differ in how they handle foreign parties and some are markedly more experienced with them. We advise on the office that fits your document set.

Do we need the embassy affirmation translated?+

Yes. It is issued in your language, and the amphoe works in Thai. The usual chain is translation, then certification by the Department of Consular Affairs, then the district office.

Will you also handle the certified copies afterwards?+

Yes. We obtain certified copies of the marriage registration and, where you need them abroad, prepare the translation and legalisation chain.

Can the interpreter act as a witness?+

Some offices allow it and some do not. We plan on the assumption that you bring your own witnesses.

Deep Context and Service Standards

Sourced from the Lawyer Act B.E. 2528 (1985), the Lawyers Council Regulation on Notarial Services Attorneys B.E. 2546 (2003), the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961, and official publications of the Department of Consular Affairs (MFA).

Firm Overview and Practice Framework

Thai Notary Service is a full-service Thai law office providing document notarization, certified translation, legalization chain management, and international document consultancy. Our team includes Notarial Services Attorneys licensed by the Lawyers Council of Thailand under the Royal Patronage, and we operate offices in Bangkok, Greater Bangkok, and a partner network in every province across Thailand. We serve individuals, expatriates, cross-border couples, students, corporates, multinationals, and government agencies requiring documents with legal effect both inside Thailand and abroad.

All notarial acts follow the Lawyer Act B.E. 2528 (1985) Section 27 read with the Lawyers Council Regulation on Notarial Services Attorneys B.E. 2546 (2003), the sole legal basis authorizing Thai attorneys to certify documents comparable to a foreign Notary Public. Every attorney on our team has completed the accredited training and examination administered by the Lawyers Council and holds a verifiable registration number searchable on the Lawyers Council public registry.

By choosing a firm that houses Notarial Services Attorneys in-house, clients consolidate a multi-stage legalization chain under one accountable roof: attorney notarization, followed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) legalization at the Department of Consular Affairs, followed by embassy or consular legalization for the destination country. Since 21 November 2024 the Kingdom of Thailand has become a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents). Documents apostilled in Thailand are now accepted in more than 125 member states without embassy re-legalization, materially reducing turnaround time and cost.

Trust Standards — PDPA, SLA, Quality Assurance

On data protection, the firm strictly follows the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), Sections 24, 26, and 27 — collecting, using, and disclosing personal data only to the extent necessary for the engagement, disclosing purposes, and obtaining consent from data subjects in advance. For clients in the European Union, processing follows GDPR Article 6 (lawful basis) and Article 46 (Standard Contractual Clauses).

Our Service Level Agreement targets an inquiry response within one hour during business hours (09:00–18:00, Monday to Saturday), attorney appointments within twenty-four hours, standard notarization within one business day (or two to three hours on express service), certified translation within three to five business days per ten A4 pages, MFA legalization within two business days on standard service (one business day express), and embassy legalization typically within three to fifteen business days depending on the mission's own policy.

Every deliverable passes a three-tier quality-assurance chain: (1) the responsible attorney or translator, (2) a Senior Attorney or department head reviewing substance and formatting, (3) a Quality Control desk performing the final pre-delivery check. Any firm-side error is remedied at no additional cost, and if a document is rejected by a government authority due to a firm-side error, we cover the entire re-filing fee.
