Consular legalisation for use in Vietnam: case studies, required documents and steps

Vietnam is not a party to the Apostille Convention for documents issued in Thailand, so a Thai document used in Vietnam normally passes through Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and then the Embassy of Vietnam in Bangkok. Order matters: the embassy will not act on a document that has not already been authenticated by the ministry.

  1. Confirm the receiving body and purpose in Vietnam — Work permit, company incorporation, marriage registration and study each have their own document list and freshness window in Vietnam.
  2. Obtain or refresh the Thai originals — Where a document is older than the recipient accepts, we request a fresh issue from the Thai authority first so the chain is not rebuilt later.
  3. Certified translation — Translated in the layout of the original, including seals and registrar endorsements, in the language the Vietnamese recipient accepts.
  4. Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication — The Department of Consular Affairs authenticates the signature and seal of the issuing Thai authority. Turnaround follows the ministry's own queue.
  5. Embassy of Vietnam legalisation — Only after ministry authentication does the embassy legalise the document for use in Vietnam, on its own published processing schedule.
  6. Delivery and record set — We return the legalised originals with a scanned record set so you can send digital copies ahead of the physical file.
